Recently, Washington State passed the HB 1551, which restricts the lead content in cookware or cookware component. The restrictions will take effect on January 1, 2026.
The main provisions of HB 1551 are as follows:
●Beginning January 1, 2026, no manufacturer may manufacture, sell, offer for sale, distribute for sale, or distribute for use in Washington state cookware or a cookware component containing lead or lead compounds at a level of more than five parts per million.
●Beginning January 1, 2026, no retailer or wholesaler may knowingly sell or knowingly offer for sale for use in Washington state cookware or a cookware component containing lead or lead compounds at a level of more than five parts per million.
It should be noted that the HB 1551 stipulates a civil penalty of up to $5000 for the first violation. For repeated violations, a civil penalty of up to $10000 will be imposed.
CTT proposal:
Washington state has already restricted the use of lead in cookware, and CTT recommends that companies exporting to this market take corresponding measures and verify product compliance before HB 1551 goes into effect to avoid large civil penalties.CTT can provide enterprises with one-stop comprehensive solutions for consulting, testing and training.
